Army Rank Insignias,
Sweden
Introduction
The following rank insignias are those
that apply from October 1, 2019.
The Amy rank insignia are worn on the
shoulders. This applies to both shirts
and uniform jackets/coats. On the field
uniform jackets, the rank insignia is
worn on the left collar tab.
On the shirt of the field uniform, the rank insignia
are worn on the left chest.
On the uniform jackets, the insignia for the branch
of the service is worn on the right collar tab.
(infantry, artillery, etc.).
The images of the rank insignias below are shown
with a green background. This appearance is what
they have on the field uniform, the M90 uniform.
On the service dress uniform M87, the rank insignia
have a blue/gray background.
On all rank insignias from Corporal up to Colonel,
in addition to the rank insignia itself, there is also
the unit insignia. In the examples below, the
artillery unit insignia is used, a grenade.
NATO's standardized rank scale (NATO code) is
used by NATO and its partners to compare military
ranks between the armed forces of member
countries as well as for a number of administrative
tasks. OF-1 to OF-10 are used for officers, and OR-
1 to OR-9 are used for other ranks.
The NATO codes linked to each respective Swedish
rank on this page are the codes used by the Swedish
Armed Forces.
Private soldiers
The rank insignias in green are those used on the
combat uniform M90, and the ones in blue/gray are
on the service dress uniform M87A.
NATO code for each rank:
1.
Menig = Private, OR 1
2.
Menig 1 & 2 = Private, OR 2
3.
Menig 3 & 4 = Private, OR 2
4.
Vicekorpral = Specialist, OR 3
Military rank insignias - The
Swedish Army from 2019
Lower ranks
The rank insignias in green are those used on the
combat uniform M90, and the ones in blue/gray are
on the service dress uniform M87A.
NATO code for each rank:

Korpral = Corporal, OR 4
2.
Furir = Sergeant, OR 5
3.
Överfurir = Staff Sergeant, OR 5
Officers
The rank insignias in green are those used on the
combat uniform M90, and the ones in blue/gray are
on the service dress uniform M87A.
NATO code for each rank:
1.
Fänrik = Second Lieutenant, OF 1
2.
Löjtnant = Lieutenant, OF 1
3.
Kapten = Captain, OF 2
4.
Major = Major, OF 3
5.
Överstelöjtnant = Lieutenant Colonel, OF 4
6.
Överste = Colonel, OF 5
Generals
The rank insignias in green are those used on the
combat uniform M90, and the ones in gold are on
the service dress uniform M87A.
NATO code for each rank:
1.
Brigadgeneral = Brigadier General, OF 6
2.
Generalmajor = Major General, OF 7
3.
Generallöjtnant = Lieutenant General, OF 8
4.
General = General, OF 9
Non Commissioned Officers
The insignia of the non-commissioned officers in the
guard regiments are silver-colored. In the other army
regiments, they are bronze-colored.
The rank insignias in green are those used on the
combat uniform M90, and the ones in blue/gray are
on the service dress uniform M87A.

Sergeant = Sergeant First Class, OR 6
2.
Översergeant = Senior Sergeant First Class, OR 6
3.
Fanjunkare = Master Sergeant, OR 7
4.
Överfanjunkare = Senior Master Sergeant, OR 7
5.
Förvaltare = Sergeant Major, OR 8
6.
Regementsförvaltare = Command Sergeant Major,
OR 9
Överserfanjunkare is a new rank introduced in 2023.
The rank insignia of “Överfanjunkare” has a laurel
wreath below the rank designation itself, which
distinguishes it from the rank insignia of a
“Fanjunkare.”
