In order to keep track of your ancestors in a Family chart you have to number them. There are many different systems to number ancestors but the most commonly used is the Hager's system. Each generation after the start person gets a generation number in Roman digits. The father and mother to the start person are generation I. The next generation, grand parents are generation II, and the next generation III etc. Each person in respective generations will be numbered with Arab digits. You start with the father and then the mother etc. Father is I-1, Mother I-2, FF II-1, FM II-2, MF II-3, MM II-4, FFF III-1, FFM III-2, FMF III-3, FMM III-4, MFF III-5, MFM III-6, MMF III-7, MMM III-8 etc. This is the system I use.
