There was a great development of the army uniforms during the 19th century. Many new uniforms were introduced. Different branches of the army were assigned different types of uniforms. This chapter about the army uniforms of the 1800s are divided into several subpages depending of branch of Army, i.e. infantry, cavalry etc.The subpages about the Infantry and Cavalry are further subdivided depending of the period (1800 - 1840 respective 1840 - 1900).So, first pick a branch and then the period. In the beginning of the 1800s there was a definitive break with the uniforms of the 1700s. The uniforms being developed in the 1800s were far better designed for battle conditions. In 1842 the Prussian Army introduced coat, a tunic (Swe: vapenrock) instead of the former unpractical tail coats. The former high cap, the tschakå, was replaced with a type of leather helmet known as casque (Swe: Kask), a custodian-style helmet. The custodian helmet was based on the spiked pickelhaube worn by the Prussian Army. The new army tunic offered better protection for the upper part of the body in bad weather such as rain and strong winds and the helmet gave protection to the head against cuts and blows and stay firmly on the head.Sweden was early in introducing these new uniform garments. In 1845 there was a major remodeling of the army uniforms. The entire infantry, artillery and a large part of the cavalry were equipped with new uniforms. There were many changes to the uniforms during the first decade of the 1800s. However, the cavalry uniforms weren’t submitted to the same amount of changes as the infantry.
