The Johnson's - A Swedish Emigrant Family

Introduction

Johannes Nilsson (1858 - 1945) lived at the end of the 19th century in Förslöv parish in the north-western corner of Skåne province, Sweden. In 1881 Johannes emigrated from Sweden to the USA and settled down in Chicago, IL. He returned to Sweden already in 1883. The following year, 1884, Johannes married Petronella (1855 - 1948) and the couple started a family. Johannes was a tenant farmer (torpare) in Ranarp, Förslöv parish. The couple had 8 children of whom 2 died young. The children were born in Ranarp, Förslöv. All surviving children emigrated from Sweden to the USA between 1904 and 1910 and settled down in New York City, most of them in Brooklyn. They were all single when they emigrated but married and started families in New York. Johannes and Petronella’s son Per Hilmer married an American woman while the other siblings married other emigrated Swedes (one sister married a Norwegian).

The Johnson Family in the USA

In the manifest page we have seen Johannes Nilsson who emigrated from Skåne, Sweden to the United States in 1881. He returned to Sweden in 1883, married and settled down. We have also seen his son Per Hilmer Johansson in the manifests as well in the emigrant ticket page. He emigrated from Sweden to the United States in 1904 and made a revisit to Sweden in 1910. Below is a picture of Johannes Nilsson and his family. The photo was made in Brooklyn, New York City, in 1924 when Johannes and Petronella Nilsson visited from Sweden. In the center of the midlle row we have Johannes Nilsson and his wife Petronella surrounded by children and grandchildren. Johannes and Petronella had 6 children: 2 sons and 4 daughters. Further 2 children died young. The sons’ surname and the daughters’ maiden name was Johnson (Johansson). The fourth person from left in the top row is the son Per Hilmer Johansson (Hilmer Johnson). Hilmer's wife is Katherine Johnson who is to the left of him. The photo is shown with consent of Peter Johnson, son of Hilmer and Katherine. Peter wasn't born until 1929 and therefore not in the photo.

The daughter Edla Regina died in 1910. Another daughter died young, Edla 1894-1895.
All of Johannes and Petronella Nilsson’s children settled in the Swedish district of Brooklyn, New York City (NYC). Sante moved to Florida in 1916 and Hilmer left NYC before 1917 and settled north of the city in Westchester County where he married Katherine Candi. A few years later Hilmer and Katherine moved to the Bronx, NYC. The other siblings remained in Brooklyn. Most siblings married fellow countrymen. However, Klara’s husband was from Norway and Hilmer’s wife was American. Johannes Nilsson had an older brother, Carl-Magnus Nilsson (1856-1899), and his descendants still today live in the Förslöv area of the Bjäre peninsula, Skåne, Sweden.

The story of the Sjöberg snusdosa

Sante and Elin Johnson of the Johnson family above had a daughter Irene Sophia (1916 - 2001). She married Willard John Carlson (1916 - 1998) and the couple had a daughter Sonja Irene (Carlson) Thomas. Sonja is in the possession of a small metal box, about 3 inches wide. The box is engraved and the inscription reads: “J. Sjöberg, Hismofors, 1905”. This box is a "snusdosa" (Swedish) - a snuff box. To the left is an image of Sonja's "snusdosa" (snuff box). Snus is a Swedish moist powder tobacco product. It is consumed by placing it under the upper lip for extended periods of time. Snus does not result in the need for spitting. In former days' snus was bought loose, by weight. Therefore, most people in Sweden had a personal “snusdosa”, small boxes where they had their daily ration of snus. The inscription is “J. Sjöberg, Hismofors, 1905”. Below is another name engraved “Pål Olsson, Wånga”. The box belongs to Sonja Thomas (nee Carlsson) in Orlando, Florida. This "snusdosa" came to America with her Swedish ancestors on her father's side when they immigrated to the USA. The image is shown with consent of Sonja Thomas.
