About the Names of the Allotted Regiments

About the Names of the Allotted Regiments - Sweden

Allotted regiments were established in most of the Swedish provinces. In a few provinces there were more than one allotted regiment. In other words, the allotted regiments had their “rotar” (infantry) or “rusthåll” (cavalry) in the province/provinces where they were established. Since the allotted regiments were established in the different provinces they are also referred to as provincial regiments (landskapsregementen – landskap = province). For more information about "rotar" and "rusthåll" and how the Allotment System worked, please see About the Allotment System See also Allotted vs Enlisted Regiments

Subdivisions of Sweden

Sweden has two independent subdivisions: Provinces (Landskap) which is an old historical subdivision from Medieval times Counties (Län) which is an administrative subdivision instituted in the 1630’s. Normally Län is translated into "County" in English. However, the Swedish Län has a role more similar to the State in the USA compared to the role of the US County. The Swedish Län doesn’t have the independence of the States in the USA though. The US County is better compared to the Swedish “Kommun” rather than to the Swedish Län.
